Breathe Deeply for Great Lung Power and a Long Life!

By

In 1990, as I was recovering from the trauma of a six-way heart bypass operation, restoration of my lung function was high on my priority list.

Several times each day I breathed deeply into a device called a spirometer, which measured the volume of air I was able to suck into my lungs. This was a difficult task at first, but before long my lungs were in better shape than before the surgery.

Every single day we take about 23,000 life-giving breaths, which bring almost 10,000 quarts of air into our lungs.

As we age and become less active the cells in our lungs start to die off faster than they are replaced.

This loss of lung function sends us down the path to reduced strength, stamina, energy and disease-fighting power. The smaller your lungs, the greater are your chances of getting to Heaven before your appointed time.

A sharp decline in lung power occurs with “normal” aging. By age 60 the average person has lost more than 50% of his or her breathing capacity!

But we don’t have to be average. Loss of lung function is preventable…even reversible.

Al Sears, MD gives us a proven formula for improving lung function. For over 17 years, Dr. Sears has helped thousands of patients boost their lung power and reverse disease in his clinic and research center in Florida. Dr. Sears tells that the benefits of restored lung power are increased stamina and endurance better immunity from sickness and improved energy.

When your lungs shrink your oxygen supply plummets and makes you sluggish and ready for nap time.

Researchers from the European Society of Cardiology reported that even a moderate decline of lung volume increases your risk of heart disease by a whopping 200 percent.

When your lung volume drops the lack of oxygen sets off a chain reaction that causes the mind to become foggy and energy to plummet.

Even the simple act of getting off the couch can leave you breathless… and your body becomes a helpless target for any number of deadly diseases.

But it doesn’t have to be so.

You can improve lung power in just minutes per day with the following exercise program:

  • Warm up for two minutes by walking, cycling or other cardiovascular exercise and then increase the intensity for a short time until you are breathing deeply. It may take as little as 20 or 30 seconds to become winded.
  • Do not go until you are exhausted…you should be able to carry on a conversation.
  • Rest until your breath and heart rate return to normal.

Repeat the above routine three or four times during each exercise session and you’ll soon find that your breathing improves.

Dr. Sears says, “I’ve seen frail 85-year-olds regain their strength and come back to life by using this system.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gene Millen tells his story about a life changing event. “The cardiologist looked up from the treadmill report and grimly stated, ‘You’re a walking time bomb. You need to go to the hospital immediately.’ “Three days later the heart surgeon sawed open my chest and stitched in bypasses to six of my favorite arteries.”

Gene’s near heart attack experience kindled a passion for learning and sharing the secrets of how to avoid a heart attack and live a healthy, active and long life. Check out Gene’s website: http://www.heart-health-for-life.com

Dr. Maggie Claymore is a leading neonatologist at a bustling Boston hospital who works with the smallest and sickest patients: premature babies so ill that other doctors might give up on them. Her life is full of the challenges and the ethical conundrums that arise every day on the highest-tech edge of medicine. In her forties, childless by default, supremely confident, she knows her exact place in the world. Maggie’s orderly life begins to unravel when she gets an anonymous note calling her ethics and reputation into question. At first she is able to dismiss the charges, but when her accuser goes public – posting malicious signs around the hospital implicating her in a child’s death – she finds herself mired in personal and professional hell. With everything that she has and everything that she is thrown into doubt. Maggie must fight for herself even as she fights for the lives of her tiny patients. Maggie’s metamorphosis from fearful to indignant to self-doubting is complex and viscerally powerful. The Mystery of Breathing is not only a page-turner but a compelling and poignant portrait of a woman trying to come to terms with her life decisions.

The Pain Chronicles

The Pain Chronicles

$5.99

Each of us will know physical pain in our lives, but none of us knows when it will come or how long it will stay. Today as much as 10 percent of the population of the United States suffers from chronic pain. It is more widespread, misdiagnosed, and undertreated than any major disease. While recent research has shown that pain produces pathological changes to the brain and spinal cord, many doctors and patients still labor under misguided cultural notions and outdated scientific dogmas that prevent proper treatment, to devastating effect. In The Pain Chronicles, a singular and deeply humane work, Melanie Thernstrom traces conceptions of pain throughout the ages – from ancient Babylonian pain-banishing spells to modern brain imaging – to reveal the elusive, mysterious nature of pain itself. Interweaving first-person reflections on her own battle with chronic pain, incisive reportage from leading-edge pain clinics and medical research, and insights from a wide range of disciplines – science, history, religion, philosophy, anthropology, literature, and art – Thernstrom shows that when dealing with pain we are neither as advanced as we imagine nor as helpless as we may fear. Both a personal meditation and an intellectual exploration, The Pain Chronicles illuminates and makes sense of the all-too-human experience of pain – and confronts with extraordinary grace and empathy its peculiar traits, its harrowing effects, and its various antidotes.

Breathing Water: A Bangkok Thriller

Breathing Water: A Bangkok Thriller

Behind every great fortune is a great crime . . . For American ex-pat writer Poke Rafferty, a late-night poker game delivers an unexpected prize: an “opportunity” to write the biography of Khun Pan, a flamboyant, vulgar, self-made billionaire with a criminal past and far-reaching political ambitions. The win seems like a stroke of luck, but as with so many things in vibrant, seductive, contradictory Bangkok – a city of innocence and evil, power and poverty – the allure of appearances masks something much darker. Within a few hours of folding his cards, Rafferty, his wife, Rose, beloved adopted daughter, Miaow, and best friend, Arthit, an honest Bangkok cop, have become pawns in a political struggle among some of Thailand’s richest, most powerful, and most ruthless people. A hero to the poor and dispossessed, Pan is like a bone in the throats of the beautiful, sophisticated “good” people who own and control every facet of Thailand and want more. There are many who would prefer that a book, especially a sympathetic book, stay unwritten. And there are others who want to expose Pan’s darker secrets, information useful in a preemptive strike against this profligate billionaire who can threaten their hold on power – a situation they will go to murderous lengths to prevent. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t, Rafferty is breathing water and sinking deeper in a sea of intrigue with each passing hour. The trouble multiplies when a missing young street friend of Miaow’s reappears, needing Rafferty’s help to protect an innocent village girl trapped in a baby-selling ring. Pushed ever closer to the abyss, Rafferty has one chance to get them all out alive. But to succeed, this foreigner must do the impossible – keep a cool Thai heart.
